On August 16, 1815, Juanito Bosco was born, in the hamlet of I Becchi, Castelnuovo D´Asti, between the hills of Monferrato 30 kilometers from Turin, capital of Piedmont, Italy.
Times of famine, unemployment and peasant crisis. The Congress of Vienna reorganizes Europe after the fall of Napoleon and restores the European monarchies.
Almost two years old, Mama Margarita tells him: "Come, Juan, you no longer have a father." Orphanhood and poverty constitute his childhood. At the age of nine, Juan will have a dream that will be the first indication of his vocational pursuits and of the project that God had for him and for millions of young people.
Juan grows up with many difficulties, but with the help of very specific people he discovers the paternity of a God who supports and accompanies him in his daily life: Don Juan Calosso, who with the first few letters teaches him how important it is to have a “friend of the soul ”Whom you trust, attends your needs for maintenance and stimulation for the study.
The cities of Castelnuovo and Chieri are the space where Juanito studies and works in preparation for the priesthood, upon the death of Don Calosso. Giving private lessons, being a coffee waiter, a tailor's apprentice and other trades, Juan pays for his studies with the help of his mother. With his school friends, he forms the “Society of Joy”, through which he experiences shared friendship that helps to fulfill daily duty and to look at life from faith.
In 1841, now a priest, it is Don José Cafasso - today a saint -, his confessor and spiritual father, who helps him go to meet the most abandoned young people in Turin: the boys who populate the jail.
